Surfactants are one of the indispensable ingredients in cosmetics and are widely used in many aspects such as cleaning, emulsification, dispersion, wetting and foam formation. According to different hydrophilic groups, surfactants can be divided into the following categories: anionic surfactants, cationic surfactants, amphoteric surfactants, and non-ionic surfactants.
Today, we will take a look at the commonly used abbreviations for surfactants, which can help you quickly identify and reference specific surfactants in some materials.
01. Anionic surfactants
Anionic surfactants, also known as anionic detergents, mainly refer to straight chain sodium alkylbenzenesulfonate and sodium alkylsulfonate substances, which are divided into four categories: carboxylate salts, sulfate salts, sulfonate salts, and phosphate salts. They have good cleaning, foaming, dispersing, emulsifying, wetting and other characteristics. Widely used as a detergent, foaming agent, wetting agent, emulsifier, and dispersant.

02. Cationic surfactants
Cationic surfactants are mainly nitrogen-containing organic amine derivatives. Due to the lone pair electrons in the nitrogen atoms of their molecules, they can bond with the hydrogen in acid molecules through hydrogen bonds, causing the amino groups to carry a positive charge. According to the chemical structure of cationic surfactants, they can be mainly divided into four types: amine salt type, quaternary ammonium salt type, heterocyclic type, and rhonium salt type.

03.Amphoteric surfactant
Bipolar surfactants are surfactants that contain both anionic and cationic hydrophilic groups in the same molecule. The biggest feature is that it can both give and receive protons, making it a mild surfactant.
