Common Amphoteric Surfactants Used in Detergents

Amphoteric surfactants are the least produced category of surfactants, and they are generally not used as primary agents in detergent formulations. Instead, they are mainly utilized for their combined capabilities in cleaning, antistatic properties, and softening effects to enhance the feel of the product after washing.
Here are six commonly used amphoteric surfactants in detergents:

1.Dodecyl Dimethyl Betaine (BS-12)

Properties:

Excellent dirt removal, softening, antistatic, foaming, and wetting performance; good resistance to hard water and corrosion inhibition for metals; gentle on the skin with low eye irritation; easily biodegradable.

Applications:
①Used in shampoos and other personal hygiene products, BS-12 can be combined with anionic surfactants to produce rich, fine foam while reducing skin irritation, softening hair, and helping it to be more manageable, as well as providing viscosity enhancement.

②Used in detergents and soaps, BS-12 exhibits excellent dispersing ability for calcium soap, and can be blended with non-ionic and anionic surfactants to improve hard water resistance and cleaning ability, with good permeability and foaming properties.

2.Coconut Fatty Acid Amido Propyl Betaine

Properties:

Low irritation to eyes and skin; ideal cleaning, conditioning, antistatic, and antibacterial properties; good softness; rich and stable foam; effective in viscosity regulation.

Applications:

Used in personal cleansing products such as shampoos, bubble baths, facial cleansers, and baby care products; serves as a mild conditioning agent, especially suitable for baby products.

3.Coconut Fatty Acid Amido Propyl-2-Hydroxy-3-Sulfopropyl Betaine

Properties:

Compatible with various surfactants, reducing their irritation properties, providing rich and fine foam that is not affected by pH, good hard water resistance, and conditioning and antistatic properties; stable over a wide range of pH values.

Applications:

Used as foaming agents, detergents, and water-soluble boosting agents for formulating mild premium shampoos, bathing products, conditioners, skin cleansers, skincare agents, and household as well as dishwashing detergents.

4.2-Lauryl-N-Carboxymethyl-N-Hydroxyethyl Imidazoline

Properties:

Good foaming, thickening effects, calcium soap dispersion, and wetting performance; gentle on skin, with antibacterial properties capable of killing E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus.

Applications:

Utilized for its mild, solubilizing, and foaming properties for laundry detergents, liquid dishwashing detergents, hard surface cleaners, and stain removers. Also used in formulating mild products such as low-irritation shampoos, gentle facial cleansers, bubble baths, hand soaps, and shaving creams.

5.2-Alkyl-N-Hydroxyethyl-N-Hydroxypropyl Sulfobetaine Imidazoline

Properties:

Amber liquid with good cleaning, wetting, and foaming properties; low irritation to eyes and skin.

Applications:

Used in shampoos, bubble baths, specialized fabric detergents, softeners, wetting agents, and metal hard surface cleaners.

6.N-Lauroyl Glycine Sodium

Features:

Rich, fine, and stable foam; mild and non-irritating; possesses strong antibacterial and cleaning properties with excellent biodegradability. However, due to cost concerns, it is not widely used in detergents.

Applications:

Suitable for laundry liquids, facial cleansers, body washes, shampoos, face masks, and toothpaste.
